Island Time Solar Cooker Designs

Students in year 7 are busy designing, making and testing their ideas for solar cookers in Island Time. In the current unit, which focuses on Innovation, groups of students are working together to investigate solar energy, material properties, principles of reflection and the culture and context of rural China to design a sustainable and effective means by which to cook using only energy from the sun. We were pleased to welcome a team of six teachers from Shatin College who were keen to see the Island Time course in full flow. We look forward to sharing more of the outcomes from this project later in the term.

Year 6 Cross Phase Day

On June 5th we welcomed our new Year 7s to Island School. This was an opportunity for students to get used to the layout of the school, their new Houses and most importantly their new Housemates. Students completed their first inter-house challenge which was to complete a form board which will stay in their classrooms and lead into their first Island Time unit on identity. The challenge involved having photos taken in various places around the school, interviewing and writing profiles of their new classmates and arranging all this information in an imaginative way on their form boards. The winners were Einstein, closely followed by Flaming Fleming and Wilberforce’s Yellow Brick Road with Nansen, Rutherford and Da Vinci in joint 4th place.

In the evening Island School Principal, Chris Binge, welcomed the parents of our new students to the school and outlined the importance of the House system in providing vertical pastoral care for students at Island School. Parents were then able to meet their child’s form tutor and Head of House in a session led by their Senior Head of House to discuss with current students the things to look forward to in Year 7 and the challenges their children will face.

We hope that our new students have a wonderful break over the summer and look forward to seeing them on Monday August 20th at 8.00am. They will be in school from 8.00am until 11.00am and should wear their Island School House PE kit.

Past Island School Students

                                                           Melanie Wilson                        Natasha Miles

Melanie Wilson, ex-Wilberforce who left Island School in 2002, has been selected to row for the Quad Four for Great Britain in the Summer Olympic Games! Melanie learned to row at Middle Island, under the watchful eye of Bryan Massingham (then Head of Geography) as part of the 6th Form Games lessons. We wish her the very best of luck and hope to see her in the medal rostrum receiving a medal.

Natasha Miles has been playing cricket as part of the England Ladies Squad, and has recently been selected for England B. Natasha played for the England Academy versus the South Africa team, taking at least 2 wickets and scoring 26 not out. It seems likely that she will break into the England senior squad very soon!

Ski Trip 2013 Chinese New Year

This year 29 students headed to the slopes in Verbier. With lots of snow this year, snow ball fights were plentiful. We had students skiing and snowboarding and exploring the vast valleys.

With such a successful trip this year, the planning begins now for next year!

From beginners to advanced skiers and snowboarders, there is something for everyone in Verbier. We will depart on Friday 8th February and arrive back on Saturday 16th February. The approximate cost of the trip is $26,000 (this is due to an increase in flights and Airport Tax).

There are limited places so if you would like join us next year please come and see me (Ms Leung) to get your name on the list.
